OPUS to MP3
Convert online and free OPUS to MP3
Converting in only three steps
Almost all of us encounter the OPUS format in our everyday lives without even noticing it. WhatsApp saves voice messages as .opus files. Other apps such as Telegram, Signal and many dictation programmes also use this file format as standard. And for good reason: OPUS files were developed specifically for this purpose – for voice content. The relevant frequency range for voice recordings is significantly narrower than for music. OPUS is optimised for this and compresses speech much more efficiently than conventional music formats such as MP3, resulting in smaller file sizes and good quality. The disadvantage is that not all software and media players can play OPUS files. So if a voice message needs to be archived or sent by email, for example, or edited with an editing programme, it may be useful to convert it to MP3 format. The solution lies in converting OPUS to MP3 – by far the most widely used audio format. MP3 files can be opened on virtually any device without the need to install additional software or codecs.
OPUS vs. MP3 comparison
| Feature | OPUS | MP3 |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Xiph.Org/IETF (2010) | Fraunhofer Institute (1991) |
| Bitrate | 6-510 kbit/s | 64-320 kbit/s |
| Optimal for | Speech and real-time audio | Music and universal |
| Compression | Very high efficiency (better at low bitrates) | Good efficiency (less effective at less than 96 kbit/s – speech) |
| Compatibility | Limited (good with modern apps and browsers) | Nearly universal – standard format |
| File extension / MIME type | .opus / audio/opus | .mp3 / audio/mpeg |
In summary: OPUS is the more technically advanced format – almost 20 years more advanced than MP3 – and often delivers better quality for the same file size, especially for speech. MP3, on the other hand, scores points for maximum compatibility. For everyday use, such as playing on older devices, embedding in presentations or sending by email, MP3 remains the safest choice. With our free online converter, OPUS files can be securely converted to MP3 in a few seconds – directly in your browser, without installation and without registration.
How to convert OPUS to MP3 online?
- Why can't I play WhatsApp voice messages directly on my PC? WhatsApp saves voice messages in OPUS format. Windows Media Player and many other programmes do not natively support this format. Converting to MP3 makes the voice message playable in these programmes without any problems.
- Is quality lost when converting OPUS to MP3? Technically speaking, yes. Since both formats are lossy file formats, conversion always involves recompression, which inevitably results in some information being lost. In practice, this difference is not audible, as the MP3 format we use at 128 kbit/s can reproduce speech very well.
- Can I convert multiple OPUS files to MP3 at once? If you need to convert a large number of OPUS files, you can do so easily with our Premium Account: up to 50 files can be converted to MP3 at the same time. Files up to 750 MB can be converted individually free of charge.
- Download your MP3 file Download your finished MP3 file. Your files will be automatically deleted from our servers.
